Doyle Brunson not looking backWas goofin’ around online yesterday when I saw a story about Oscar Niemeyer, the well-known Brazilian architect, who just turned 102 years old. What did it mean to Niemeyer to have reached such an advanced age?

“Turning 102 is crap,” he said. “There is nothing to commemorate.”

The article went on to clarify that such grouchiness should not be taken to indicate that Niemeyer doesn’t enjoy life — quite the opposite, in fact. It’s just he’s too busy living to get overly worked up about yet another birthday. In addition to working on still more projects, he continues to enjoy cigars (“an old habit that I cultivate with much gusto,” he says), and at age 98 married his 60-year-old secretary.

The story made me think a little about poker’s elder statesman Doyle Brunson, who at age 76 keeps rolling along like he’s half that. I remembered a post from the first week or so of this year’s World Series of Poker where I was relating having worked a long day. As I left and was walking through the Rio hallway I heard “a faint whirring sound.” The sound got louder, then finally reached me. “I looked up somewhat woozily as the cowboy hat-wearing man on the scooter roared past, moving at what seemed to my dazed self the speed of thought itself.”

It was Brunson, of course, motoring along at three o’clock in the morning. Like I say, the article made me think of Brunson — for a few reasons.

'The Godfather of Poker' by Doyle Brunson (2009)One was because I recently read Brunson’s new autobiography, The Godfather of Poker, in which he talks near the end about his long life.

“Different doctors have told me that my body, as badly as I’ve treated it, must be programmed to last a hundred years or more. One said 125, another said 100, so I settled on 120, which was a fair compromise.” (I reviewed Brunson’s book over on Betfair a couple of weeks ago, and wrote a bit about here, too.)

Another reason I might have thought of Brunson was because I’ve been following @TexDolly on Twitter. In between the frequent blonde jokes and, now, Tiger Woods jokes, Brunson will share other news and/or thoughts. Just a couple of days ago, he reported how he and a number of other poker people at the ongoing Doyle Brunson Five Diamond World Poker Classic all voluntarily had their heads shaved in support of Thuy Doan. Doan was diagnosed with cancer this fall, and after chemotherapy had lost her hair. So earlier this week Brunson, Eli Elezra, Barry Greenstein, Tom “durrrr” Dwan, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, and about a dozen others got their heads shaved at the Bellagio as a show of support.

Also read something @TexDolly a couple of days ago where Brunson noted how the Five Diamond was about to begin. “It will shorten the days if I go deep in the tournament,” he wrote. “Getting old sucks!” (Why does it seem like Brunson is winking at us there?)

A third reason why the story of the 102-year-old Brazilian architect made me think of Brunson had to do with the fact that I spent a short time yesterday railing the pot-limit Omaha games over on Full Tilt Poker, in particular watching Isildur1 appearing to be reaching the end of the line with regard to his once boisterous bankroll.

During the period I was watching, he and Cole South were playing six tables of heads-up $50/$100 PLO, with Isildur1 buying in short at all six. South quickly stacked him at each table, and the pair moved to $100/$200 PLO, where they followed a similar sequence. They played a few more hands at a couple of $200/$400 PLO tables, but then Isildur1 suddenly left the scene. You can read more about this latest episode in Isildur1’s rapid fall here in Nicole Gordon’s “Online Railbird Report.” According to another report, the Swede, once up over $5 million, is now down something like $2.5 million overall.

Anyhow, during the hands the railbirds were chirping away in the chatbox throughout, excitedly firing their various commentaries and non sequiturs as the action continued.

And, as usual, there was that guy.

If you’ve railed any of these high stakes games, you know to whom I’m referring — the one who gets a laugh out of typing “RIP Doyle” again and again. Usually gets a few reactions from others wondering if, indeed, Brunson has died. Finally everyone realizes the lame hoax and they get back to offering their unsolicited critiques.

One might wonder where the idea came from — to joke about Brunson’s passing. The fact is, Brunson himself might well have encouraged such morbid-seeming goofs when back in January he made a prop bet that he would not die in 2009.

You might recall the story. A fellow named Mack Rawden wrote an article at the beginning of the year for the site CinemaBlend in which he listed the “100 Most Likely People to Die in 2009.” Haven’t checked the entire grim list, but I do see Michael Jackson included there.

Rawden also included Brunson at No. 16, and Texas Dolly responded by writing on his blog that Rawden was a “clown.” “I would like to lay 10-1 for any amount if anybody knows this joker.”

Eventually the two were put in touch, and a prop bet was arranged between them. If Brunson makes it, Rawden will donate $1,000 to the American Cancer Society; if not, Rawden gets $10,000.

Niemeyer says at the end of that article, “I don’t fear death,” a sentiment Brunson echoes both in his autobiography and in the way he lives his life. As the examples of the Brazilian architect and famous poker player readily teach us, fearing death is no way to live. As Socrates says in the Apology, “this fear of death is indeed the pretence of wisdom.”

No, much better to keep on building.

James Jenkins of Combat Academy and Wesley Carvalho of Gold Team are up. Jenkins has got heavy and accurate hands, which he uses to drop the Brazilian more than once, and in the third round Jenkins hits Carvalho so hard he spins completely around before returning to Earth. The official time of the KO is :10 of Round 3. Trevor Baney of Serra/Longo is in the cage now taking on LA Boxing’s Danny Carbonel. Baney is out-boxing his opponent and mixing in takedowns, and though he’s game, Carbonel never finds his groove. Baney takes the decision. It’s time for James Funaro of Vamos BJJ vs. Mike Fischetti of TSMMA. This one is bloody, with Fischetti popping Funaro in the nose early and prompting the ref to call in the doctor for a look. It continues, and Funaro tries to get it to the ground, but Fischetti is too skilled to let that happen and he tags Funaro again, this time opening a cut over the UCL vet’s eye. That’s enough for the ref, and the bout is called. And no lie, it takes the Asylum crew about 10 minutes to clean the cage.

UEFA Cup Final Betting: Shakhtar Donetsk v Werder Bremen

Author: admin
Category: Betting, CA, Comeback, Games, Object, Sports Betting, biggest, brazilian, calendar, chances, competition, europe, final, game, goals, hamburg, hero, markets, match, missing, night, past, price, season, time, wednesday, weekend, work, yellow

Ben Lyttleton tells us why Frings aren’t the same for Werder Bremen when the suspended Diego isn’t around and how Shakhtar can benefit from his absence ahead of the UEFA Cup final on Wednesday night. Best bet: Shakhtar to win the match in 90 minutes @ [2.86].

Both this week’s Uefa Cup finalists, and indeed three of the four semi-finalists, only entered this competition after dropping down from the Champions League. It’s only the third time this has ever happened (after Arsenal-Galatasaray in 2000, and Feyenoord-Dortmund in 2002) and it may
explain why opposition is already gathering against next season’s Europa League. But no-one can look at the quality of opposition that Werder Bremen and Shakhtar Donetsk have beaten on their way to the Istanbul final and doubt they deserve to be there.

Bremen have been among the favourites ever since they eliminated the early-season favourites, AC Milan, 3-3 on away goals in the Round of 32. After then, it was a fairly comfortable draw for them, as they beat relegation-threatened Saint-Etienne (3-2 on aggregate), an imploding Udinese (6-4) and, after an astonishing second-leg comeback, German rivals Hamburg 3-3 on away goals.

For Shakhtar, progression to Istanbul has been tougher, although they made light work of beating Tottenham (3-1), before edging past CSKA Moscow (2-1), Marseille (4-1) and Dynamo Kiev (3-2).

If lots of goals were the defining feature of Bremen’s run to the final, for Shakhtar it was late strikes: five of their goals came in the last ten minutes of matches, summed up by Ilsinho’s 90th minute-winner in the semi-final success over Dynamo.

The venue of Istanbul’s Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, home to Fenerbahce, for the final may suit Bremen midfielder Mesut Ozil, born in Turkey as a Fenerbahce fan. The home fans may support Bremen even more given that Shakhtar boss Mircea Lucescu coached first Galatasaray and then Besiktas to the title in his time in Turkey.

How all this affects the market on Wednesday of course depends on who is available for the game: Shakhtar are missing Tomas Hubschmann through suspension but have Olexandr Kucher back; Bremen are missing striker Hugo Almeida through suspension, while centre-backs Naldo and Per Mertesacker both missed the weekend loss to Karlsruhe though Naldo is expected to be fit for the final. “As a Brazilian, I know a lot about the stars at Shakhtar, as many of them come from there,” said Naldo. “Jadson takes excellent free-kicks but he’s not as agile as Fernandinho, who is very quick and strong.” In attack, Claudio Pizarro has a bruised foot but is likely to start, while Markus Rosenberg, with only two goals this calendar year, will replace Almeida.

But the key factor in the game rests with someone who definitely won’t be playing: Bremen’s playmaker Diego picked up his third yellow card of the campaign against Hamburg, and is ruled out of the final. “It’s impossible to over-estimate his importance to the Bremen side: not just his six goals, scored in three of the last four rounds, but his vision and ability to create chances for Pizarro and his strike-partners. Bremen have to get used to being without Diego - he is off to Juventus next season - but his absence could come one game too soon for them.

The Diego factor affects most of the markets in this game: Bremen are ([2.7]) favourites to win the game in 90 minutes, but without their talisman, Shakhtar’s price of ([2.9]) has to be better value. Similarly, the goals-market should be adjusted accordingly: Bremen’s Uefa Cup games have averaged 3.25 goals, while in the last five league matches that Diego has missed, the goals tally has gone down to an average 2.6 (a figure boosted by Bremen’s 5-0 tonking of Karlsruhe).

Shakhtar have been defensively sound throughout, only conceding five goals in their eight Uefa Cup matches: and those are two reasons for the Under-2.5 goals price to be attractive at [1.96]. The half-time score of 0-0 also seems a good price at [2.8], as
Bremen’s all-out attacking reputation precedes them. Remember, without Diego, Bremen are not the same side!

Pizarro remains their biggest goal threat, with 28 goals in all competitions on his return to Germany, but his “to score” price is likely to be around the ([2.8]) mark, too short for my liking. Instead, look at Torsten Frings, around [8.0] as he takes spot-kicks when Diego is not around, and Naldo, who is a threat from set-pieces, at [10.0].

For Shakhtar, Yevhen Seleznov at around [4.5] represents better value than Luiz Adriano and Olexandr Gai at around [3.5] to score at anytime, while free-kick specialist Dario Srna, Shakhtar’s skipper since the departure of Anatoliy Tymoschuk, is decent value at about ([8.0]).

Neither side have ever made it to a penalty shoot-out in Europe though Bremen have more recent experience of spot-kick drama after beating Hamburg in a shoot-out in the German Cup semi-final. Goalkeeper Tim Weise was their hero then and has since, inevitably, been labeled a penalty expert. Bremen are [10.5] to win on penalties in the Method of Victory market, but if, like me, you think Shakhtar will win in 90 minutes, the ([2.64]) looks a little short.
