After failing to acquire another legitimate player to help Dwyane Wade before the trading deadline expired in the 2010 NBA basketball season, the Miami Heat should consider going to their initial plan of getting a free agent in the offseason.

While the New York Knicks, the Chicago Bulls, the Washington Wizards, the L.A. Clippers, and the Sacramento Kings made a surplus of combined trades to give them major cap relief after the season, the Miami Heat were caught on the sidelines watching their advantage fade away.

Chicago and New York were already expected to make a run for Dwyane Wade, but now they can offer him the chance to possibly play alongside LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Amar’e Stoudemire, or Joe Johnson.

”You pay attention and notice what’s going on around the league because you’re a player in this league, and there’s also a business factor,” Dwyane Wade said of teams looking to join the summer sweepstakes.

”But no team is more important than the team you play for, and seeing your team put itself in position to win at a high level for a long time.”

A Chicago Bulls tandem with Derrick Rose or any of those names would have to be enticing for Wade. If Miami isn’t able to convince him the team will contend next year, the Chicago native would have a hard time saying no to a Bulls offer like that.

Tomorrow at 11 a.m. ET at the Clubhouse at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Florida, golfer Tiger Woods will be kicking off the 2010 Tiger Woods Mea Culpa Tour.

Already generating the kind of buzz only befitting perhaps the world’s greatest golfer and philanderer of our time, the Tiger Woods 2010 Mea Culpa Tour is also scheduled to stop at The TODAY Show (co-host Matt Lauer is an avid golfer) and on Oprah Winfrey’s couch — and no doubt at several major upcoming PGA tournaments. (The Master’s begins just after Easter. Watch Tiger rise up and ascend to golfing heaven!)

Interestingly, according to National Enquirer executive editor Barry Levine (as reported on ESPN’s E:60), the whole Tiger Woods mistress story was almost a non-story. Almost. As we all know what eventually happened. (Fore!)

Me, I don’t really care about Tiger. Yeah, I’m a bit disappointed that the image was far from the reality. But that’s the problem with our celebrity- and athlete-worshiping culture. We forget that celebrities are just actors and athletes are not heroes. They are just people who are really good at what they do — and happen to get a lot of press coverage.

I just hope that Tiger’s little coming out party won’t hurt sales of the Tiger Woods Mistress Commemorative Plate Collection. (Order your set today! Supplies are limited!)

Can you believe that?

With all the hype surrounding Super Bowl XLIV this Sunday, BetUS.com wants all of you to bet on a couple of movie stars who are having some sort of ”love spat” if you will.

Of course, since most of you still fantasize about Angelina Jolie, those folks from BetUS.com know ya’ll will bet on these betting odds anyway since the Super Bowl is still more than a couple of days away and you don’t have anything else to do.

And in case you haven’t heard, there are rumors that claim Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are splitting up. Of course, we have no idea if the rumors are actually true are not but as far as Brangelina is concerned, the Hollywood couple were having dinner when the rumors broke out.

So where did the rumors come from? Apparently, it all began after Brad Pitt’s real estate purchase. Pitt bought a new house next door to the one he currently shares with Jolie and according to the rumors, the house Pitt bought is going to be a bachelor pad so he and Jolie can split up.

The rumors also claim that Pitt wanted to live next door so he can still be close enough to the kids.

However, according to TMZ.com, the house in question was actually bought back in August of last year, that means Pitt already bought the house waaay before any of the rumors about them splitting up came out. TMZ also explained that Pitt bought the house so he could expand the sprawling estate he and Angelina already own.

Of course, that won’t stop you from speculating right? That’s why…

J.D. Salinger died on Wednesday at age 91. Been a while since we’d heard from him.

Been a while also since I’d thought much about Salinger. Like most, I encountered The Catcher in the Rye as a young person, and like some I went on to read Nine Stories and everything else I could find. As a teen I suppose I identified somewhat with Holden Caulfield’s frustration. And puzzled over Seymour’s suicide in “A Perfect Day for Bananafish.”

But like I say, haven’t thought much about Salinger since, other than occasionally to wonder what he’s been up to, and whether he ever wrote anything again since 1965 when the last story of his to appear in print — the lengthy “Hapworth 16, 1924” — was published in The New Yorker. Perhaps now that he’s gone, we may find out more about what he’s exactly been up to these last 45 years. (Or not.)

Many have speculated about why Salinger — once a genuine literary celebrity, famous not just in academic circles but well beyond — stopped publishing and so thoroughly withdrew from the public eye. One oft-repeated story, appearing in The New York Times article from yesterday about Salinger’s death, concerns him having been interviewed by some high school students for what he thought was going to be an innocuous piece in the local paper. The interview wound up on the editorial page (not on the high school news page), and Salinger apparently was so upset he soon began refusing interview requests.

He also built a six-and-a-half foot fence around his property.

Publishing is a tricky business. One never knows exactly how others are going to receive your words and ideas. As in poker, there’s always an element of risk that must be weighed against whatever reward may come from putting yourself “out there.”

Just so happens that on Wednesday — the day I wrote about driving a lot — I was in the car listening to a National Public Radio segment that had to do with blogging and the way one potentially loses control of one’s message when putting one’s words and ideas on these here intertubes.

The story was about the Pope who is apparently considering whether or not to start some sort of blog. A few experts were asked for their thoughts, and there was some funny, irreverent humor in there with people giving the Pope advice about the need to blog every day, to use hot links (not footnotes), and so forth.

One such expert, David Weinberger (a technology pundit and blogger), came on to address this issue of what happens when one publishes online. “Putting a message out on the internet is exactly the same thing as losing total control of your message,” said Weinberger. “People take it up, they republish it, they make fun of it, they contextualize it, [and] the simple message becomes incredibly complex.”

As if to confirm what Weinberger was saying, there was another story about Apple announcing its new iPad in which the reporters noted that there probably weren’t any women involved in the naming of the new tablet computer. Without being specific, they were alluding to the instantaneous reaction on the internet to the name “iPad” which saw some associate it with a woman’s product. (Some may have noticed that “iTampon” became a “trending topic” on Twitter within an hour of Apple’s announcement.) I suppose you could call that another example of having (somewhat) lost control of the message, with the speed of the ’net significantly accelerating that process.

I’ve been well aware for a long time how keeping a blog — or writing and publishing, generally speaking — necessarily involves “losing total control” of one’s message. But really, who wants “total control”? If, that is, these are indeed “messages” we are delivering, with a hope that those messages might be heard and perhaps responded to in some fashion, and not just “broadcasts” (or sermons?) for which we neither expect or desire feedback.

No, publishing means being willing to share the “control” over one’s messages. Otherwise we’re just talking to ourselves. Like playing solitaire — no risk of losing, but not much to gain, either.

In a rare interview from 1974, Salinger told a reporter of how content he was not to be publishing. “It’s peaceful. Still. Publishing is a terrible invasion of my privacy. I like to write. I love to write. But I write just for myself and my own pleasure.”

I can respect that, but that’s about all I have to say about it. Not much one can say in response to someone who prefers sitting out to playing.

Well, that’s what one former Bills quarterback is saying anyway.

Since Jim Kelly retired, the Buffalo Bills have started nine different quarterbacks under center, all of them failing to put the Bills back to prominence.

The Bills’ lackluster play in the recently concluded 2009 NFL football season has made Buffalo’s lack of a good quarterback all the more apparent. And as far as Kelly is concerned, he has an idea on who can save this franchise and put ‘em back to title contention, Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow.

Yes, since the Bills have a legitimate shot at the overall No.1 draft pick, Jim Kelly says the Bills should take Tim Tebow since the guy is THE key to a return to greatness for this franchise.

”Whether it’s Tim Tebow, whether they’ll have a shot at him when draft time comes, you have to look at the top three quarterbacks in the draft, really study them. And you look for a guy with good character, good leadership ability and good arm strength, and a guy who doesn’t come from California,” Jim Kelly said.

”I like Trent personally,” Kelly said, referring to Trent Edwards, the current Bills QB. ”He works hard. But he’s had three years. It’s time to find somebody who is the future of the Buffalo Bills. If I’m the owner, that’s what I’m thinking.”
