Members of the Clark County announced today that the legendary and world famous “Welcome to the Fabulous Las Vegas” sign that has welcomed millions of visitors for fifty years is close to be included in the National Register of Historic Places.
After a meeting of the state Board for Museums in History in Carson City, the county spokesman, Erik Pappa said that they have filed the paperwork needed to incorporate the sign in the National Register of Historic Places, and that the sign could be included in May, 2009. The National Register of Historic Places is part of the National Park Service.
“This sign has become a very important symbol for our community. Untold thousands have had their photos taken in front of the sign. Placing the sign in the National Register makes eminent sense, especially now during the county’s centennial year.” said the Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid.
The members of the Clark County Commission, in where the famous sign is located, said the sign has a high historic significance as a symbol of the tourism and advertising industries golden era and as part of the American post-World War II entertainment. Clark County officials also expressed that the sign is “an excellent example of Exaggerated Modern/Googie architecture” and noted that designer Betty Whitehead Willis was a highly respected designer and a Las Vegas native.
The sign, which reads “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada” on the front and “Come Back Soon” on the back, was created in 1959 when salesman Ted Rogich sold Clark County officials on the idea of welcoming visitors as they arrived in Las Vegas. Willis, who by the time was working as a graphic artist for Western Neon, was chosen to design the sign without knowing that it was going to become an essential piece of the Las Vegas history. Willis designed signs for many hotels and businesses in the Las Vegas area, including the original El Rancho Vegas sign, the sign for the Normandie, built in 1937 by Bob Huffey, the Blue Angel Motel sign on Fremont Street, the Moulin Rouge sign and the Silver Slipper Gambling Hall sign.
The famous sign receives millions of visitors every year and was recently upgraded to include a parking lot with 12 spaces and a safe area in where visitors can take pictures of the sign.

Harrah’s opens pre registration for 2009 WSOP
Harrah’s Entertainment announced yesterday that pre-registration for the 2009 World Series of Poker is now open to players.
Harrah’s Entertainment announced yesterday that pre-registration for the 2009 World Series of Poker is now open to players. The 2009 WSOP will feature a total of 57 events with buy ins ranging from $1000 to $50.000 and running from May 26th to July 15th at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 2009 will maintain the same structure used last year, in where the $10.000 Main event will take a three month pause to resume in November with the final nine table schedule to run from November 7th to 10th. Some of the notable changes implemented this year include larger chip stacks, the elimination of re buys for all the events and a new and stricter code of conduct. Last year players could use foul language as long as it wasn’t directed at anyone, but this year Harrah’s has banned the use of depreciatory words and foul language in any public area of the casino at any time.
All the 57 events are expected to surpass the number of entries registered last year, reason why the tournament organizers are encouraging players to preregister early in order to guarantee their seats. The 2009 championship series will feature three $1,000 events (No Limit Hold’em event #4, the Ladies No-Limit Hold’em World Championship, and the Seniors No-Limit Hold’em World Championship). Most of the events on the schedule have entry fees of $1,500 (18), $2,000 (5), and $2500 (11), there are also ten $10,000 championship events, including the Heads Up Championship, Omaha, Pot Limit Hold’em, Seven Card Stud and the NL Texas Hold’em Main Event. The higher buy in events this year are the special $40,000 No-Limit Hold’em event programmed to celebrate the WSOP’s 40th Anniversary, and the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E World Championship.
Players interested in registering early can use cash, cashier’s checks, wire transfers, and Rio casino chips as payment for their entry fees. Event Pre-Registration is also available in person at the Rio All Suite Hotel and Casino and online at worldseriesofpoker.com under the event registration tab. Players residing outside US are recommended to pay by wire transfer, in which they will receive the exchange rate into US currency at the time the wire is received.
