cdddf753d6kiffin Lane Kiffin Leaves Tennessee for USCThat headline would be shocking if it didn’t start with the name Lane Kiffin.  At this point, we wouldn’t be surprised if Kiffin actually turned out to be a spy for the NCAA compliance office committing violations on purpose to test the resolve of the department.  But alas he doesn’t work for the NCAA.  Far from it.  He works for Tennessee.  No wait.  He works for USC.  Are we completely sure he wasn’t actually rehired by the Oakland Raiders?
It’s true.  Kiffin has turned one 7-6 season with the Vols into the head coaching job with one of the nation’s premier football programs.  One that could be facing NCAA violations remind you.  If you think of it that way, the whole thing may be gloriously perfect.  The man who redefined the term “secondary violation” heads to a school currently being investigated.
USC athletic director Mike Garrett feels he got the right man for the job in convincing Kiffin to return to the Trojans.  He went as far as to describe Kiffin as “creative.”  Almost as descriptive as calling something “interesting.”  Creative Kiffin is.  Humble he is not.  But that may be exactly what USC wants, and if so, they go their man.

So Kiffin leaves the SEC and the conference loses a notch or two on its entertainment rating.  For all his faults, Kiffin definitely kept us on our toes and wanting more.  He played the role of villain perfectly and at times said things so amazingly ludicrous, you wondered if he was entirely with it.  But that’s gone.  Not on a national level, but a regional one.  There will be no singing Rocky Top when the Kiffin-led Vols beat Florida.  No more convincing recruits to head to Knoxville because at South Carolina gas pumping is a major.  No stories to booster clubs about a rival coach’s recruiting violations which in turn is a recruiting violation.

Kiffin takes all of that west to lead Team Hollywood.  Schools like Cal and Stanford are probably beating each other senseless with textbooks while the schools of the great states of Oregon and Washington are wishing for a divisional split.  All the while, sports reporters on the West coast couldn’t be happier.  Their jobs just got that much easier.  Kiffin writes the stories himself.
Goodbye Lane.  We hardly knew you and you never got to that point where we were comfortable with your indiscretions.  You never became that cousin who always said the wrong thing and smelled kinda funny but we still loved.  Maybe time could’ve brought comfort of your arrogance.  Probably not.  Either way, we’ll never know.

e8e6b9a7dajack 116 Oregon Ducks V Ohio State Buckeyes in 2010 Rose BowlThe irresistible force meets the immovable object.

No, it’s not Hulk Hogan versus Andre the Giant all over again but the 2010 Rose Bowl. Oregon’s irresistible running game, averaging 236 yards per contest, takes on Ohio State’s immovable defense that has only given up a measly 83.7 yards to the opposing team.

Well, something’s got to give and this Rose Bowl game between the Oregon Ducks and the Ohio State Buckeyes could very well decide which is really important in winning championships, defense or offense?

ohio_state_buckeyesThe Ohio State Buckeyes have always been the better team every single time they went up against Oregon. The Buckeyes have been so dominant that they haven’t been defeated by any Oregon Ducks team for seven straight contests.

Yes, Ohio State is 7-0 all-time against Oregon, which makes betting on the Ducks at the Rose Bowl a little bit harder to fathom.

Of course, if you’re a Ducks fan, you’d be happy to know that these two teams haven’t played each other since 1987 and a lot of improvements have been made by the Ducks since then. Oregon now has a formidable running game that ranks sixth overall in the nation and as good as that offense has been, their defense isn’t so bad either.

Oregon has only surrendered 329 yards per game, which ranks…
